Sri Lanka: Increased security, localized disruptions likely during Independence Day celebrations through Feb. 4

Heightened security likely in the run-up to and during Sri Lanka's Feb. 4 Independence Day holiday. Exercise caution.

Warning

Increased security is likely across Sri Lanka during the 76th Independence Day celebrations Feb. 4. In Colombo, official events will likely occur at Independence Square and Galle Face Green. Authorities will close roadways near sites hosting official events and rehearsals through Feb. 4, including along Galle Road between Kollupitiya and Ceramic junctions. Traffic diversions and enhanced vehicular checks are also possible along various roads in the Sri Lankan capital. Authorities may require establishments nationwide that sell meat or alcohol to close on the day; other local businesses typically remain closed during the holiday. Commemorative programs will also likely occur in districts nationwide through Feb. 4.

Tight security and localized traffic disruptions are likely near celebration venues and government buildings nationwide. Security agencies have not issued specific terror warnings for related events but will likely be on high alert for possible militant attacks. Security will be particularly tight near sensitive locations that could be targeted, such as public squares, government buildings, transport hubs, and religious sites. Transport disruptions are probable. Passengers could experience delays clearing security and customs at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB). Demonstrations by various groups are possible, especially in Colombo and the ethnic Tamil-majority Northern Province.

Plan for traffic disruptions near all celebration sites, especially in downtown Colombo and allow additional time to reach destinations. Consider avoiding official ceremonies, prominent events, government buildings, and other crowded places due to possible security threats. Avoid all protests as a precaution. Carry proper identification documents; remain polite and non-confrontational if stopped by security forces. Heed all official traffic and security advisories.
