Pakistan: Jamaat-e-Islami party to protest over power shortages in Karachi, Sindh Province, May 11

Jamaat-e-Islami rallies planned in Karachi, Pakistan, May 11, to denounce power shortages. Increased security, disruptions likely.

Warning

The Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) party has called for protests denouncing problems related to power distribution in Karachi May 11. JI leaders are accusing private utility provider K-Electric of mismanagement, resulting in power shortages, load shedding, and price hikes. Main gatherings will occur outside the Governor House in the Civil Lines area and/or the K-Electric headquarters along Sunset Boulevard Road. Additional unannounced rallies are possible at or near K-Electric facilities, government buildings, public squares, the Karachi Press Club, and major intersections like the Teen Talwar Monument. Demonstrations typically occur in the afternoon.

Authorities will likely monitor protests and move to disperse overly disruptive crowds. Associated transport disruptions are probable. Clashes between police and activists are possible. Larger demonstrations may also result in localized business disruptions. Ongoing power disruptions will likely continue in the coming weeks, though government buildings and large businesses relying on private generators are unlikely to be significantly affected.

Transport services may be affected due to malfunctioning traffic signals during load-shedding periods. Temporary commercial and communications disruptions, including cellular service disruptions, may also occur during power outages. Essential services such as ATMs and petrol stations may also face disruptions. Blackouts could adversely affect electronic water filtration systems and security protocols, including alarm systems and electronic fences; opportunistic criminal activity could increase during electricity outages.

Avoid all demonstrations due to possible violence. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately. Allow additional travel time near gatherings. Heed all official transport and security advisories. Conserve electricity. Charge all communication and portable electronic devices when possible. Unplug electronic equipment that is not connected to surge protectors. Exercise caution when driving in areas affected by load shedding. Verify that security systems are working, including after power resumes. Ensure that generators are functional and properly fueled.
