Australia celebrating the 50th anniversary the 1967 national referendum giving Aboriginal Australians the right to vote
Event
Australia will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of the May 27, 1967, national referendum that gave indigenous Australians the right to vote for the first time. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull addressed Parliament for the occasion earlier this week, calling for a more united and cohesive Australian society. Hundreds of celebrations and parties have been organized throughout the week in towns and communities across the country. Transportation disruptions and traffic congestion is likely surrounding the events.
Context
Prior to May 1967, Aboriginal Australians were not counted as a part of Australia's population in the census, regarded instead as "non-citizens." The referendum essentially recognized Aboriginals as Australian citizens, and prohibited the federal government from drafting discriminatory or apartheid-type laws specifically targeting Aboriginals throughout Australia.
