South Africa: 138 arrested in gold mine strikes near Johannesburg
At least 138 arrested since June 6 during gold mine strikes west of Johannesburg

At least 138 people have been arrested during a strike at Sibanye Gold's Cooke operations west of Johannesburg, which began on Tuesday, June 6. Up to 16 miners have been assaulted during demonstrations against the removal of illegal miners and a policy that forbids food in the mines.
Sibanye has vowed to clear all illegal miners from mines by January 2018.
Context
Illegal gold mining has plagued South Africa for the past few decades. Sibanye employs almost 4000 miners, and its operations would be significantly impacted were the strike to continue.
