South Africa: Severe weather in Western Cape June 7-8

Event

The South African Weather Service has issued number of “severe” weather warnings for the Western Cape region for June 7-8. Heavy rain and strong winds are forecast; subsequent flooding and coastal surges are possible through Thursday, June 8. According to the provincial authorities, the weather system has not yet reached peak force. Average winds of 30 to 40 knots (60-80 km/h) are expected, with gusts up to 50-60 knots (100-120 km/h).

Severe weather has reportedly already resulted in some displacements, infrastructural damage, and roads closures. Metrorail services between Kraaifontein and Bellville are currently suspended (as of the afternoon of June 7) and all schools in the region are closed, including the University of Cape Town. Courses are expected to resume on June 8. Humanitarian aid has been dispatched to assist affected communities.

Individuals present in the Western Cape region are advised to keep abreast of weather forecasts, follow all instructions as issued by local authorities (e.g. potential evacuation orders), and allow additional time to travel. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock an adult over.
