Iran: Three killed in attack near Pakistani border July 15

Event

On Saturday, July 15, two workers and one suspected terrorist were killed in an attack in the Sistan and Baluchestan province near the Pakistani border, according to Iran's Revolutionary Guards Corp (IRGC). The IRGC stated that the attack was conducted by a terrorist group linked to foreign intelligence services, and that two other suspected terrorists were wounded.

Context

According to Iranian media, ten Iranian border guards were killed in the end of April by the Sunni militant group Jaish al-Adl, which is based is the Sistan and Baluchestan province.

On June 7, the Islamic State (IS) carried out coordinated attacks at the Iranian Parliament and the Khomeini Mausoleum in Tehran, marking the first IS attack in Iran. Since then, Iranian authorities have launched a series of anti-terrorist operations, resulting in the deaths and arrests of many suspected militants present in the country.

There is a persistent threat of terrorism in Iran due to the involvement of Iranian forces and militias fighting IS within the context of the Syrian conflict.
