Iran: Islamic State threatens attacks in Tehran

Event

The Islamic State (IS) released a video on Wednesday, August 9 , threatening to carry out attacks in the Iranian capital Tehran and calling on young Iranians to "wage jihad" in the country. The video was released via IS's Amaq news agency and featured militants degrading the Shi'a sect of Islam while also threatening further attacks in neighboring Iraq.

Security may be increased in Tehran in response to the threats.

Context

Iran has deployed new security measures to improve its anti-terror operations following twin terrorist attacks that occurred in Tehran on June 7, killing 18 people. IS has claimed responsibility for the attacks.

IS has repeatedly threatened to carry out attacks in Iran, a Shi'a-Muslim majority country, as it refuses to recognize the sect as a legitimate interpretation of Islam.
