Norway: Additional border controls at Bergen airport until September 25

Additional border controls to be implemented at Bergen airport until September 25 due to UCI Road World Championships

Warning

Event

The Norwegian transportation authorities announced the implementation of additional border controls at Bergen airport from September 1 until September 25 due to the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) Road World Championships. Increased security screening and associated delays at border checkpoints into Bergen are likely in the coming weeks.

Context

The UCI world championships are an annual cycling competition held in different cycling styles including road cycling, track cycling, cyclo-cross, mountain biking, BMX, and indoor cycling.

Five EU countries - Austria, Denmark, Germany, Norway, and Sweden - have implemented more stringent controls at their borders in response to the ongoing migrant crisis and concern over illegal movement within the Schengen Zone. The current Schengen Borders Code allows the implementation of temporary border controls for Member States in case of serious threat to public policy or internal security. The current Norwegian border control policy has been renewed multiple times, with the previous extension occurring in May and scheduled to expire on November 11, 2017.

Advice

Travelers should always carry passports or other appropriate identification documents issued by their respective countries when crossing the border to or from Norway. Allow for extra time when crossing the border due to possible delays and cooperate with authorities.
