Libya: Clashes reported in coastal migration hub Sabratah
Clashes reported in coastal Mediterranean city of Sabratah, a hub for illegal migration to Europe; six dead and 48 wounded as of September 21
Event
Clashes between rival groups in the coastal city of Sabratah (west) over the past four days have reportedly resulted in at least six dead and 48 wounded as of Wednesday, September 21. Sabratah, located 80 km (50 mi) west of Tripoli, serves as a hub for illegal migration and smuggling to Europe through the Mediterranean Sea. Further clashes are possible in the coming days.
Context
Following the 2011 uprising that toppled Muammar Gaddafi, Libya has been divided into rival governments and factions with their own militias and political parties. The security situation in Libya remains precarious and there is little to no sign of a return of relative stability in the near-term. People smugglers have capitalized on the political turmoil, using the violence-ridden country as a gateway to move illegal migrants to Europe.
Advice
The security environment in Libya remains complex. Although travel is permissible in some areas, other areas should be considered strictly off limits. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
