South Africa: Shooting at Cape Town Airport Oct. 18
Gang-related shooting incident at Cape Town Airport October 18; operations unaffected
Event
A minor shooting incident was reported at approximately 05:15 (local time) at Cape Town International Airport (CPT) on Wednesday, October 18. Operations at the airport have been unaffected, with no reported disruptions to flights. Two men are believed to have been wounded in the incident, which is believed to be related to gang violence.
Context
Violence between rival gangs is rife throughout South Africa. Travelers may also be targets for theft at international airports – including CPT and Johannesburg’s O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB).
Advice
Given high levels of criminality at South African airports, travelers are advised to organize their arrival prior to landing in order to minimize the likelihood of being targeted. Arrange to be met at the airport by a trusted contact, remain extremely vigilant, and carry only the minimum amount of cash and valuable objects. Adhere to all instructions issued by airport and security personnel.
More generally, individuals in the country - particularly in urban areas - are advised to be on guard against high levels of criminal activity and to maintain a low profile at all times. Be particularly vigilant after dusk and avoid traveling on foot after nightfall. Criminals may be armed; do not resist if confronted and do not look your attacker(s) directly in the eye. Drive with windows closed, doors locked, and all personal possessions hidden from sight.
