Venezuela: Opposition fears fraud in Oct. 15 elections /update 1

Oppositions warns of potential fraud in October 15 regional gubernatorial elections; protests likely

Warning

Event

The political opposition coalition has stated it believes the country's election board is attempting to skew regional elections in favor of President Nicolás Maduro's ruling party by altering electronic ballot sheets. The regional gubernatorial elections are scheduled to be held nationwide on Sunday, October 15, with the campaign period lasting until October 12. The elections were initially slated to be held in 2016 but were postponed by the ruling party.

Political demonstrations are likely in the coming days, as well as associated violence and transportation disruptions.

Context

Venezuela was shaken by four months of anti-government protests, coinciding with ongoing political, economic, social, and health crises. While the rate and intensity of protests has fallen in recent months, the potential for further large-scale protests and associated violence remains. Over 120 people were killed amid protests and associated violence that started in April, the majority killed by security forces who have repeatedly been accused of excessive use of force.

Advice

Individuals in Caracas and other Venezuelan cities are advised to closely monitor the situation in the run up to the elections and strictly avoid all protests (and associated roadblocks) due to the likelihood of violence. Maintain a stockpile of enough food, water, and other supplies enabling you to shelter in place for several days in anticipation of a deterioration in the security situation.
