Haiti: Anti-Trump protest in Port-au-Prince Jan. 22

Anti-Trump march in Port-au-Prince January 22 to terminate in front of US Embassy; avoid all protests

Warning

Event

A protest to denounce recent derogatory comments about Haiti made by US President Donald Trump is set to take place in the capital Port-au-Prince on Monday, January 22. The march is expected to proceed down a number of major streets in the capital and conclude in front of the US Embassy. Clashes and other forms of violence, as well as traffic disruptions, are possible.

Context

It was recently reported that Trump made disparaging comments about Haiti, El Salvador, and African countries as a whole during a meeting earlier in the month, saying the US should stop accepting immigrants from these regions. Many groups, including the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, have denounced the comments as racist. Trump has so far refused to issue an apology.

Advice

Individuals in Haiti are advised to systematically avoid all forms of protests due to the high risk of violence.
