Honduras: Aftershocks following January 9 earthquake

Aftershocks continue to be felt in Honduras following the 7.6-magnitude earthquake that struck in the western Caribbean Sea late on Tuesday, January 9. The earthquake hit some 200 km (125 mi) northeast of Barra Patuca. Shaking was felt nationwide, notably along the northern coast (e.g. Puerto Cortés and Roatán), but no significant damage occurred. At least six aftershocks with magnitudes ranging from 4.2 and 5 have already been detected and the government is warning that more are to be anticipated in the coming weeks.

Advice

In the event of a strong aftershock, take shelter under a table or crouched in a corner (away from exterior walls) if indoors and protect your head with your arms. If outdoors, move away from buildings and other tall structures.
