Japan: Heavy snowfall along western coast Feb. 6
Heavy snowfall along western Sea of Japan coast results in transportations disruptions February 6
Event
Heavy snow blanketed much of the Sea of Japan coastline on Tuesday, February 6, resulting in significant transportation disruptions. In Fukui prefecture, approximately 1000 vehicles were stranded on National Route 8. The snowfall also brought the Hokuriku Shinkansen high-speed railway - linking Tokyo with the coast - and limited express trains to a halt. Additionally, flights to and from Komatsu International Airport (KMQ) and Toyama International Airport (TOY) have been delayed and canceled due to the weather conditions.
Context
The Japan Meteorological Agency has warned that heavy snowfall could continue through February 7, mainly along the Sea of Japan coast. Snow accumulation could reach 80 cm (31 in) in the Hokuriku region, 60 cm (23 in) in the Tokai region, and 50 cm (20 in) in Hokkaido, Tohoku, Kinki, and Chugoku regions. Continued transportation disruptions are thus to be expected in the coming hours and days.
Advice
Individuals present in affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, minimize nonessential travel, anticipate transportation disruptions, and follow instructions from local authorities.
