Guinea: Demonstration in Conakry July 10; “dead city” protest possible July 11 /update 3

Further protests are expected to take place in the capital Conakry on Tuesday, July 10, to denounce the rise in fuel prices. Demonstrators are expected to gather at 08:00 (local time) and march from the Tannerie roundabout through the Kenien and Bellevue roundabouts. A “dead city” protest is also scheduled to take place in the capital on Wednesday, July 11, if no agreement is reached with the government. Anticipate heightened security measures and associated transportation disruptions in the vicinity of any gatherings.

Due to recent unrest, many businesses have closed and public transportations services are limited. While most of the unrest has been concentrated in Conakry, other cities throughout the country - such as Kindia, Boké, Mamou, Labé, and N’Zérékoré - have also been affected.

Context

The price of regular gasoline has increased from CFA 8000 to 10,000 (USD 0.88 to 1.10) per liter.

Violent protests have been taking place in the capital Conakry since July 2, notably in the Petit Simbaya, Cosa, Wanindara, Cite-Enco-5, and Sonfonia areas of the Ratoma neighborhood. Police forcibly dispersed protesters who erected highly disruptive roadblocks in various areas, including on the Le Prince Highway.

Numerous protests have taken place in Guinea in recent months, mostly over sociopolitical issues.

All those present in Guinea, particularly in Conakry, are advised to closely monitor developments to the situation and avoid all public gatherings due to the risk of violence, which can flare up with little warning.
