Protests are possible in urban centers in Zambia, especially in Lusaka, leading up to local elections scheduled on Thursday, July 26. Other cities that will be holding elections include Chasefu, Chipangali, Lumezi, Chifunabuli, and Chilanga. While no protests have been planned as of Monday, July 23, spontaneous demonstrations and unrest cannot be ruled out in the coming days. Context

Particular attention is being paid to the mayoral election in the capital Lusaka following the death of the first-ever executive mayor, Wilson Kalumba. Some nine political parties are running for the position that will serve seven, relatively populous, constituencies.

Despite political parties' pledge to maintain peaceful campaigns, election-related violence broke out in June in Chilanga where voters and journalists were attacked, according to local media sources.
