Burkina Faso: Truck drivers’ strike causes fuel shortages in Ouagadougou

An ongoing truck drivers' strike, launched on Friday, August 24, has reportedly caused fuel shortages at gasoline stations in Ouagadougou and other cities in Burkina Faso. Associated protests led by truck drivers have also obstructed roads leading to the capital, according to reports on Monday, August 27. The Burkinabé government has reportedly opened negotiations between the entities in conflict, the Organization of Road Transport Operators of Burkina Faso (OTRAF) and the Union of Road Drivers of Burkina Faso (UCRB), to end the strike and resolve the fuel shortages.

Fuel supplies are expected to become increasingly scarce in Ouagadougou and other affected cities until the dispute is resolved. Further associated protests and roadblocks are possible in the coming days. A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are expected near all demonstrations.
