Port workers to hold march in Conakry August 23; associated strike threatened; avoid all protests
Event
Port workers in Conakry have threatened to launch a strike as early as Thursday, August 23, to protest the concession of the Autonomous Port of Conakry (PAC) to a Turkish company. An associated march by port workers will take place on the same day; demonstrators are planning to march from the Bourse du Travail (trade union center) to the Palais du Peuple (event hall). A related march held on August 17 was forcibly dispersed by police and similar violence is possible on Thursday.
Context
On August 16, Guinea’s Ministry of Transport confirmed that the
government had agreed to allow a Turkish company to refurbish the port
in exchange for allowing it to run the port for 25 years. Union leaders
claim that the deal threatens jobs for their workers at the port.
