Italy: State of emergency declared Aug. 15 after Genoa bridge collapse /update 2

On Wednesday, August 15, Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte declared a 12-month state of emergency in Genoa (Liguria region) and its environs after a section of the Morandi Bridge (A10 highway) collapsed amid heavy rains on Tuesday, August 14. The bridge collapse left at least 39 people dead and 16 others injured and forced the evacuations of 630 people from nearby residences; search and rescue operations were ongoing as of Wednesday. The cause of the bridge collapse is under investigation. Continuing traffic disruptions are expected on the A10 highway in the coming weeks.
