Egypt: Regular operations resume at US Embassy in Cairo Sep. 4 /update 1

Regular operations resume at US Embassy in Cairo after foiled attack September 4; continued heightened security presence to be anticipated in the area

Warning

Event

Shortly before 15:00 (local time) on Tuesday, September 4, the United States Embassy in Cairo announced it was resuming normal operations after a short lockdown in response to a failed attack earlier in the day. No casualties were reported as a result of the incident; the suspected assailant was quickly detained after a bottle holding flammable chemicals reportedly caught fire in his bag near the embassy. Egyptian authorities have since stated that initial investigations indicate that the suspect "embraces some extremist ideas and was intending to use them to commit an act of aggression." Although security operations have concluded, a heightened security presence and associated transportation disruptions should continue to be anticipated surrounding the embassy.

Advice

Individuals in Cairo are advised to report any suspicious objects or behavior and obey all instructions issued by the local authorities.
