Deadly floods reported in Uttar Pradesh on September 5-6; at least 14 people killed

Heavy rains have led to severe flooding throughout Uttar Pradesh state on Wednesday, September 5, and Thursday, September 6. According to local sources, at least 14 people were killed in floods and landslides since Tuesday, September 4. At least 8000 people were displaced from affected areas, especially along the Ganga, Kannauj, and Farrukhabad rivers. Further flooding is possible in the near-term as heavy rain is forecast in Uttar Pradesh through Friday, September 7.

Individuals present in the affected areas are advised to keep abreast of local weather forecasts, and adhere to any instructions issued by local authorities. Please be advised that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all food discarded.
