Public administrations and municipal governments close on September 20 for Ashura commemorations in Lebanon

Public administrations and municipal governments will be closed in Lebanon during Ashura commemorations on Thursday, September 20, according to a statement made by Prime Minister Saad Hariri. Gatherings for Ashura, and more generally during the Muharram period, are expected. Associated transportation disruptions are possible.

Context

Ashura is the culmination of a mourning period, which occurs during the month of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar. During this period, Shi'a and Sunni Muslims both commemorate the death of the Prophet Mohammad's grandson, Imam Hussein.

Advice

Due to the high threat of terrorism in Lebanon, individuals are advised to avoid large crowds, protests, and gatherings as a precaution and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities.
