An Italian Catholic missionary was kidnapped from his home by suspected jihadists in Bamoanga (Tillabéri region), some 125 km (78 mi) from Niamey, on the evening (local time) of Monday, September 17. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the kidnapping incident. Similar kidnapping incidents, perpetrated by jihadist groups, are possible in Tillabéri region in the near-term.

Context

A German aid worker was similarly kidnapped in Tillabéri region in April 2018. Islamist militants frequently carry out attacks in Niger, particularly in the southwestern parts of the country near the Malian border.
