Nigeria: Boko Haram kills two and kidnaps at least 25 in Borno state Sep. 4 /update 1

Event

On Tuesday, September 4, Boko Haram militants ambushed a civilian convoy traveling from Maiduguri to Gwoza (Borno state). According to local sources, at least two people were killed in the attack, including a soldier and a civilian. In addition, at least 25 people were kidnapped following the attack. The whereabouts of the victims remain unknown as of Thursday, September 6. Further attacks by Boko Haram are possible in the coming days and weeks. 

Context

The northeastern region of Nigeria (Borno, Yobe, Adamawa) is highly susceptible to attacks by Boko Haram. While Nigerian military forces have pushed insurgents from much of their previously claimed territory over the past year, attacks by the group have been on the rise since June 2017.
