Thailand: Overnight flooding in Bangkok; heavy rainfall in other provinces

Event

In the evening of Monday, September 3, heavy downpours affected the Bangkok region during rush hour, flooding several areas of the capital city, impacting road traffic and railway services (e.g. disruption of the Purple Line electric train). Other parts of the Southeast Asian country were affected as well by the violent monsoon rains and the floods they generated. Pattaya city, That Phanom district (northeastern province of Nakhon Phanom), and northern Nan province were also impacted by torrential rains and flooding of up to 90 cm of water in some areas.

Context

The seasonal heavy rainfall was brought by the southwest monsoon coupled with the impact of a low pressure area in Laos and Vietnam.

Advice

The Meteorological Department warned residents in the Bangkok region and surrounding provinces to prepare for new heavy rainfall, flooding and landslides in the next few days. Individuals present in the affected provinces and areas are advised to keep abreast of the situation, anticipate transportation and power disruptions, obey instructions issued by the local authorities, and avoid flood-prone areas.
