Lebanon: Protests in Beirut February 11-12

Ongoing protest in Beirut February 11 to denounce economic issues; further related protests on February 12

Warning

Event

The Sabaa party and the "You stink" movement, as well as students' parents, are protesting as of Monday, February 11, in front of the Ministry of Education and Higher Education. Protesters intend to denounce economic issues after a man self-immolated himself on February 7 due to its impossibility to pay his children school fees.

Furthermore, several political parties and civil society groups have called for related protests to take place on Tuesday, February 12, in Riad el-Solh Square, starting at 17:00 (local time). Heightened security measures and localized traffic disruptions are to be anticipated near any demonstrations.

Context

Several protests have been held since early January to denounce issues related to unemployment, public health, inflation, and social security.

Advice

Individuals in Lebanon, particularly those in Beirut, are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
