Earthquakes of magnitudes 6.2, 5.0, and 5.4 hit off coast of Ecuador near Santa Elena province on March 31; no tsunami warning issued, further aftershocks and associated damage likely in coming hours

Three large earthquakes hit off the coast of Ecuador's Santa Elena province in the early hours (local time) of Sunday, March 31. According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), a 6.2-magnitude earthquake was recorded at 00:04 around 27 km (17 mi) north of La Libertad (Santa Elena province), followed shortly by a 5.0-magnitude earthquake at 00:08, and a 5.4-magnitude quake at 00:28. No tsunami warnings or watches were issued by the US Tsunami Warning System, though the proximity to shore may have caused large and undetectable waves. Reports regarding damage and casualties have not emerged as of 01:00. Further aftershocks and associated damage are likely in the coming hours and days.
