CAR: Demonstrations scheduled in Bangui on June 22, 29 /update 1

Opposition coalition plans demonstrations in Bangui on June 22, 29 over alleged electoral fraud; associated disruptions likely and clashes with security forces possible

Warning

Event

The E Zingo Biani (EZB) coalition is planning to hold two demonstrations on Saturday, June 22, and Saturday, June 29, in Bangui. The first protest will be held at 15:00 (local time) on June 22 at St. Jacques ground in the 6th arrondissement and the second demonstration on June 29 will take place at Bégoua Stadium at 15:00. A heightened security presence and localized transportation and business disruptions are likely during the protests. Previous such events have resulted in the violent dispersal of protesters, sometimes involving live ammunition; similar clashes between security forces and protesters are possible.

EZB has also called on supporters to hold daily "concert de casseroles," or marches involving the banging of pots and pans, at 18:00.

Advice

Individuals in Bangui, and CAR more generally, are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all public demonstrations due to the risk of violence, maintain situational awareness and remain vigilant for militant activity, and anticipate a heightened security presence and localized disruptions near any protest sites.

In general, many Western governments advise their citizens against travel to most of the eastern part of CAR for various security reasons.
