Event

Several civil society groups are calling for a rally to be held in Rabat on Sunday, June 23, to denounce the Bahrain Conference planned in Manama on June 25-26, as well as the recent US peace plan for the Middle East. Protesters are expected to gather at the Bab El Ahad square at 10:00 (local time).

A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are expected along the march route. Similar marches are possible in other urban centres across the country.

Context

A two-day conference headed by US government officials will be held in Manama on June 25-26. The conference is named "Peace to Prosperity" and is aimed at encouraging investment in the West Bank and Gaza Strip; as part of a new US peace plan for the Middle East. A Palestinian delegation will not be present to the conference and several Arab countries have announced their refusal to attend. US officials said Morocco was to attend the conference. However, no official statement was made from the Moroccan authorities.

Advice

Individuals in Morocco, particularly in Rabat, are advised to monitor situational developments, avoid all demonstrations, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
