Members of the Cameroonian diaspora clash with police officers in Geneva on June 29 while protesting during President Paul Biya’s visit; further demonstrations possible

Swiss police used tear gas, water cannons, and stun grenades to disperse protesting Cameroonian nationals in Geneva on Saturday, June 29. Around 250 members of Cameroon’s diaspora rallied outside of the UN’s headquarters on Saturday before marching towards the InterContinental Hotel where Cameroonian President Paul Biya was reportedly staying. While the original demonstration was approved by Swiss authorities, the crowd was not authorized to march to the hotel. Further protests and associated clashes are possible in the coming days. Heightened security measures are reportedly in place around the hotel and the EU headquarters.
Context
Earlier in the week on June 25, Cameroonian protesters forced their way into the hotel and clashed with President Biya’s personal security detachment.
