Warning

Event

The PIT-CNT national trade union called for a 24-hour strike to begin on Tuesday, June 25, in solidarity with natural gas workers. The general strike was announced on Wednesday, June 5, and made to support gas workers in an ongoing dispute with Petrobras. The union is expected workers from the education, government, and public transportation sectors to all participate in the strike. Disruptions to government services, businesses, and transportation are expected. Associated demonstrations cannot be ruled out.

Context

The PIT-CNT, or Plenario Intersindical de Trabajadores - Convención Nacional de Trabajadores, has 120,000 members in Uruguay. The proposed strike comes shortly before national elections on Sunday, June 30.

Advice

Individuals in Uruguay, particularly Montevideo, are advised to monitor the situation, anticipate increased traffic congestion and demand for taxis along with disruptions to businesses, government services, and transportation, and avoid all possible public demonstrations as a precaution.
