Major flooding across Bangladesh leaves 60 people dead and around 700,000 displaced as of July 22; continued heavy rain forecast through July 25, further flooding likely

Warning

Event

Heavy rain and overflowing rivers have resulted in widespread flooding in Bangladesh, killing at least 60 people and displacing an estimated 700,000 others as of Monday, July 22. At least 5 million people, primarily in north, northeast, and southeast Bangladesh (Rangpur, Mymensingh, Sylhet, Dhaka, and Chittagong divisions) have been affected by the monsoon flooding. Heavy rain of up to 15 cm (6 in) per day is forecast in the coming days in northern Bangladesh and in upstream areas in India. Continued flooding and associated disruptions, including to transportation, telecommunications, power, and business and government services, is likely.

Advice

Individuals in Bangladesh are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate flooding, landslides, heavy rain, and associated transportation, power, telecommunication, business, and government disruptions, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities (e.g. evacuation orders). Be advised that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
