Barbados: Tropical Storm warning issued August 25

Authorities issue Tropical Storm Warning for Barbados on August 25 as Tropical Storm Dorian strengthens; rain, strong winds, and swells expected by late August 26

Warning

Event

A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Barbados as of 23:00 (local time) on Sunday, August 25, as Tropical Storm Dorian continues to strengthen as it moves towards the Lesser Antilles. As of Sunday evening, Dorian is located approximately 485 km (300 mi) east-southeast of Barbados and is moving west at 22 kph (14 mph). The storm has maximum sustained winds of 85 kph (50 mph) and is expected to strengthen in the coming days as it moves past the Windward Islands (map here). Portions of the Lesser Antilles are expected to receive between 5-10 cm (2-4 in) of rainfall, with possible maximum amounts of 15 cm (6 in) in isolated areas. Tropical storm conditions, including strong winds and swells, are forecast to impact the region by the evening of Monday, August 26.

Advice

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate adverse weather and power and transportation disruptions, and remember that running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) is enough to knock over an adult - and never drive through flooded streets; floodwater may also contain wastewater and chemical products.
