Supporters of former President Almazbek Atambayev detain several soldiers following failed raid in Koy Tash; tensions remain high as of August 8

Tensions remain high around former President Almazbek Atambayev’s compound in the village of Koy Tash (located approximately 20 km [12 mi] south of the capital Bishkek) as of the morning (local time) of Thursday, August 8. Health officials said that at least 36 people were wounded, and one soldier was reportedly killed, after special forces soldiers attempted to raid Atambayev’s compound on the night of Wednesday, August 7. Hundreds of the ex-president’s supporters rallied in Koy Tash to prevent him from being arrested. According to local media reports, six of the soldiers have been detained in the compound and Atambayev’s supporters said they will be released if electricity and communications are restored in the village.

Further security operations and a heightened security presence in Koy Tash are possible in the coming hours and days. Associated demonstrations by Atambayev’s supporters may also take place in the village as well as in Bishkek.  

Context

Almazbek Atambayev, whose presidential term ended in late 2017, has since been stripped of immunity from prosecution by president Sooronbai Jeenbekov's government and stands accused of corruption.
