Typhoon Lingling leaves five dead in North Korea as of September 8; lingering power outages and transportation and business disruptions to be expected over the coming hours and days

Warning

Event

Typhoon Lingling had left at least five people dead and three others injured in North Korea as of Sunday, September 8, after making landfall in the country around 14:00 (local time) on Saturday, September 7. According to state media, 460 houses were damaged or destroyed across the country, and thousands of others were left without power. Nearly 460 sq km (178 sq mi) of farmland were flooded, which may exacerbate already severe food shortages.

Lingering power outages and disruptions to transportation and business are to be expected in areas affected by the storm over the coming hours and days.

Advice

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, confirm flight reservations, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate adverse weather and power and transportation disruptions, and remember that running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) is enough to knock over an adult - and never drive through flooded streets; floodwater may also contain wastewater and chemical products.
