Tropical Storm Karen to pass near or over Puerto Rico September 24; rain, wind, and associated disruptions to transportation and business expected

Tropical Storm Karen is forecast to pass near or over Puerto Rico on the evening (local time) of Tuesday, September 24, according to the US National Hurricane Center (NHC). A Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect for the island. As of 14:00 on Tuesday, Karen is located at approximately 17.5°N, 66.0°W (map here). The storm is tracking northward at 13 kph (8 mph) with maximum sustained winds of 70 kph (45 mph). Karen is forecast to produce rainfall totals of 5-10 cm (2-4 in) in Puerto Rico through Wednesday, September 25, with localized totals of up to 20 cm (8 in).

Life-threatening flash flooding, damaging winds, and high storm surge are likely throughout the abovementioned areas. Associated power outages and disruptions to transportation and business services are to be expected in areas forecast to be affected by the storm over the coming hours and days.

Individuals in areas forecast to be affected by the system are advised to monitor local weather reports, confirm flight reservations, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate adverse weather and power and transportation disruptions, and remember that running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) is enough to knock over an adult - and never drive through flooded streets; floodwater may also contain wastewater and chemical products.
