Vietnam: Four killed in Central Vietnam due to floods and landslides September 5
Flooding and landslides triggered by tropical storm Kajiki leaves four dead and 14 missing in central Vietnam September 5; traffic disruption and additional flooding possible
Event
Tropical storm Kajiki made landfall in Central Vietnam on Tuesday, September 3, causing rainfall between 250-530 mm (10-20 in) as it moved towards the South China sea. As of Thursday, September 5, associated landslides and floods have killed four people and left 14 others missing in the provinces of Quang Binh, Ha Tinh, Thua Thien-Hue, and Yen Bai. Authorities evacuated 1000 families in the province of Quang Tri. Severe traffic disruptions have also been reported in several localities in Quang Binh province due to the flood.
Additional rainfall of 70-150 mm ( 3-6 in) is expected in the Nghe An and Quang Nam provinces until Friday, September 6. Consequently, associated disruptions are likely to continue in the coming days.
Context
Tropical cyclones and typhoons are common in the western Pacific and the South China Sea from June through November.

Individuals in areas forecast to be affected by the storm are advised to monitor local weather reports, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate adverse weather and power and transportation disruptions, and remember that running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) is enough to knock over an adult - and never drive through flooded streets; floodwater may also contain wastewater and chemical products.
