Heavy rain and associated flooding in Nghệ An and Hà Tĩnh provinces October 17; school closure and transportation disruptions reported

Heavy rain has caused significant flooding since Tuesday, October 15, in the provinces of Nghệ An and Hà Tĩnh (central Vietnam), forcing several schools to remain close as of Thursday, October 17. In the city of Vinh (Nghệ An) floods of 0.3 m (1 ft) and 0.5 m (1.6 ft) were recorded on Wednesday, October 16.

More rainfall is forecast to continue through Saturday, October 19. Transportation disruptions, along with possible flash floods and landslides are expected in the coming hours and days.

Advice

Individuals in of Nghệ An and Hà Tĩnh provinces are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions before setting out, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
