CAR: Flooding displaces thousands in Bangui November 13 /update 1

Event

At least 20,000 people remain displaced in Bangui as of Wednesday, November 13, following widespread flooding, which affected the capital and other parts of the country in recent weeks. Severe infrastructure damages have also been reported.

Local officials are concerned about the spread of water-borne diseases due to poor sanitation and water contamination. Weather broadcasters forecast further moderate rain in the southwest regions on November 13 and Thursday, November 14.

Further associated flooding and damages are possible, as well as associated transportation disruptions in affected areas.

Context

Heavy rains, which have affected the capital since October 20, caused the Oubangui River to overflow and flooded parts of the M'poko, Ubangi, Gbanikola, Sapeke 2, and Maya-Maya areas of Bangui.

Individuals present in affected areas are advised to keep abreast of the situation, avoid areas directly hit by flooding, and adhere to any orders issued by the local authorities or their home governments. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded. Be aware that the risk of contracting water- and mosquito-borne diseases tends to rise after periods of heavy rainfall.
