Colombia: Road between Medellin and Bogotá closed November 14,15

Authorities close road between Medellin and Bogotá due to landslides on November 14, 15; transportation delays expected

Warning

Event

Landslides along the Medellin-Bogotá road have prompted its complete closure on Thursday, November 14. Clearing operations were underway late on Thursday and it was not immediately clear as to when the road will reopen, though some estimate that two days are required.

Authorities have asked motorists to seek alternative methods. Significant traffic delays were reported on Thursday, and more of the same should be expected on Friday, November 15. Additional landslides are likely as rain is forecast to continue on Friday.

Advice

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate flooding and associated transportation disruptions (including road closures), and remember that walking or driving through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of moving water is enough to knock over an adult.
