Colombia: Three dead amid nationwide opposition protests November 21 /update 5

Defense Minister Carlos Holmes Trujillo announced on Friday, November 22, that three people had been killed in Valle del Cauca department during opposition protests on Thursday, November 21. At least 122 civilians and 151 members of the security forces were wounded nationwide as a result of clashes, while 98 others were arrested amid widespread reports of vandalism and looting. As of Friday, 11 investigations have been opened into allegations of misconduct by members of the security forces.

Dozens of mass transit stations were reportedly vandalized on Thursday, causing significant transportation disruptions in Bogotá and other major urban centers on Friday. Additionally, the mayor of Bogotá implemented a ban on the sale of alcohol as of 12:00 (local time) on Friday.

Additional demonstrations are possible over the coming days. A heightened security presence and associated transportation disruptions are to be expected in the vicinity of all protests. Clashes between security forces and protesters cannot be ruled out.

Context

Several unions and civil society groups organized the nationwide strike and rallies on November 21 to protest the policies of President Ivan Duque’s administration. Heightened security measures were approved across Colombia in anticipation of the protests, allowing local authorities to implement curfews and restrict civil movements. Colombia's borders were also closed for 24 hours starting from 00:01 on Thursday.
