Tropical system developing off the north coast may become first named storm of the season on May 16; heavy rain and strong winds forecast in the region

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) issued gale warnings for the Caribbean, southwest Atlantic, and the Atlantic High Seas on Saturday, May 16, as a tropical system develops off the north coast of the Bahamas. According to the NHC, further development is expected, with an 80 percent chance of the system forming a named storm by the evening(local time) of Sunday, May 17. Regardless of further development, the storm is expected to bring heavy rainfall to parts of the Florida Keys, southeastern Florida, and the Bahamas on Saturday. The storm, to be named Arthur should it develop further, is reportedly unlikely to become a full hurricane.
