Bangladesh: Cyclone Amphan Strengthens May 18 /update 1
Cyclone Amphan strengthens as it moves through the Bay of Bengal on May 18; heavy rains, strong winds, and associated disruptions possible through May 20

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) updated at 08:30 (local time) on Monday, 18 May, that Cyclone Amphan has strengthened into an Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm as it continues to move northwards through the Bay of Bengal. Amphan is currently capable of sustaining winds of up to 165kph (103mph) and can increase to gusts of 185kph (115mph). The IMD has warned that the cyclone may strengthen into a Super Cyclonic Storm in the next 12 hours. The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has advised all fishing vessels to remain close to the coast and proceed with caution. The BMD has also stated that rainfall will affect some areas of the country during the passage of the cyclone, which is currently forecast to make landfall between Digha (India) and the Hatiya Islands (Noakhali district) on Wednesday, May 20.
Associated flooding, landslides, and disruptions to transportation, business, power, and telecommunications are anticipated across the country in the coming days.

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate continuing disruptions, and remember that running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) is enough to knock over an adult - and never drive through flooded streets; floodwater may also contain wastewater and chemical products.
