Clashes between criminal groups kills 12 in Caborca (Sonora) on June 19; further clashes possible

Clashes between two criminal groups which broke out in Caborca (Sonora) at 23:00 (local time) on Friday, June 19, and continued into the early hours of Saturday, June 20, resulted in at least 12 fatalities. A group of 50 vehicles reportedly entered the town on Friday evening and armed individuals began to attack residences, vehicles, and a fuel station, and engaged in exchanges of fire. Additional police reinforcements have been deployed to the vicinity of Caborca following the incident and have cordoned off areas where clashes took place. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.

Heightened security measures are expected in the area over the near term.

Individuals in Sonora are advised to monitor developments, avoid the affected area, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.

Due to violence linked to the presence of various armed groups, some Western governments advise against travel to various parts of the country, notably the states of Guerrero, Michoacán, and Tamaulipas, as well as the northeastern border with the US.
