Bangladesh: Flooding affects over one million people nationwide July 14

Flooding is affecting over one million people in Bangladesh as of Tuesday, July 14. According to reports, water levels at major rivers were rising on Tuesday at multiple points in 20 districts. Many new areas in northern, northeastern, and central Bangladesh have been affected over the last 24 hours. A combination of monsoon rainfall and an onrush of water from hilly areas upstream have badly hit districts in the northern and eastern areas of Bangladesh, causing extensive damage.

The National Disaster Response Coordination Centre (NDRCC) of Bangladesh reported on Monday, July 13, that more than 280,000 people are marooned in flood water.

Relief agencies have stated that the situation in Bangladesh is yet to peak, and therefore flooding is likely to continue impacting parts of Bangladesh over the medium term.

Further rain is forecast and will likely cause further disruptions to transportation and businesses. 

Advice

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions, anticipate transportation and business disruptions, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
