Iraq: Rocket launched towards Baghdad Green Zone July 5
Rocket launched towards Baghdad Green Zone on July 5; further attacks possible
Event
A rocket was fired towards the Baghdad Green Zone from the Ali al-Saleh area of the city on Sunday, July 5. Reports suggest that a child was injured by a fragment of the rocket in the Green Zone; however, it is currently unclear if this was the result of the rocket making an impact or following its reported interception by US air defense systems installed at the US Embassy. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack at this time. On Sunday, the Iraqi military stated that they had prevented a Katyusha rocket from being launched at the Taji military base (Baghdad province), which hosts US troops.
Similar attacks targeting US facilities are possible in Iraq over the near term.
