Togo: Nationwide opposition demonstrators to gather August 1

On Saturday, August 1, opposition demonstrations are expected to be held across the country. According to media sources, opposition activist and Archbishop of Lomé, Monseigneur Philippe Kpodzro, has called on supporters to demonstrate against the results of the February 2020 presidential election which resulted in the re-election of incumbent President Faura Gnassingbe for a fourth term. The exact details of timings and demonstration locations are not yet known. Gatherings are possible in Lomé and other major cities, such as Tsevie, Vogan, Aneho, Kpalime, Afangnan, Atakpamé, Sokodé, Kara, and Mango. Public squares and government buildings are likely hot spots for protests.

A heightened security presence and localized disruptions should be expected in the vicinity of demonstrations. Clashes between security forces and protesters cannot be ruled out.
