US: Puerto Rico government implements state of emergency, with water rationing to begin on July 2

Puerto Rican authorities implement state of emergency due to drought, with water rationing to begin on July 2; further restrictions possible

Warning

Event

The government of Puerto Rico declared a nationwide state of emergency on Monday, June 29, due to a significant ongoing drought in the country. Due to the limited water supply, the Island will start water rationing on Thursday morning, July 2, for about 140,000 homes and businesses, including in the capital San Juan. The water rationing will allow houses to access running water for 24 hours every other day.

Further restrictions are likely to be introduced should the drought continue.

Advice

Those in the affected areas are advised to conserve water, stock up on bottled water, keep abreast of the situation via local media outlets, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
