Rocket fire reported in Baghdad Green Zone on August 27; heightened security presence to be expected
Event
Social media reports indicate that a rocket attack has taken place in the Baghdad International Zone (Green Zone), with at least one explosion reported and sirens activated. Local sources report that a drone may have set off an alarm at the US embassy prior to a Katyusha rocket impacting to the south of the International Zone. There was no immediate information available regarding casualties. The attack has been attributed to pro-Iranian Shia militia groups.
A heightened security presence is to be expected in the area over the near term as security forces carry out investigations.
Context
The attack comes following a short lull in rocket attacks against US and Western sites in Iraq. Five incidents of indirect fire (IDF) in and around Baghdad were reported in the week between August 11 and August 18.
Advice
Individuals in Baghdad are advised to closely monitor the situation, avoid the affected area, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments.
The security environment in Iraq remains complex. Although travel is possible in some areas with proper security protocols in place, other areas should be considered strictly off-limits. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to all travel.
