Warning

Event

At approximately midnight on Friday, August 28, three rockets impacted in the vicinity of the Baghdad International Zone (Green Zone). The rockets reportedly landed in an empty square in the Green Zone. Security forces discovered rocket launchers in an area west of Baghdad. The attack came after a rocket landed in the Al-Jadriyah neighborhood of Baghdad, south of the Green Zone, at approximately 21:10 (local time), on Thursday, August 27. No casualties or damage have been reported in either attack.

A heightened security presence is to be expected in the area over the near term as security forces carry out investigations. Further attacks against Western targets in Iraq cannot be ruled out.

Context

The attacks come following a short lull in rocket attacks against US and Western sites in Iraq. Five incidents of indirect fire in and around Baghdad were reported in the week between August 11 and August 18.

Advice

Individuals in Baghdad are advised to closely monitor the situation, avoid the affected area, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments.

The security environment in Iraq remains complex. Although travel is possible in some areas with proper security protocols in place, other areas should be considered strictly off-limits. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to all travel.
